Reading blog 1 - Michael Green

Updated: Sep 29, 2021

Upon reading this article on the works of Michael Green, not only did I gain a better understanding of how copyright and plagiarism works as well as how to take art beyond what it's already loose definition entails. Taking something as iconic and successful as Jeff Koon's Ballon Dog sculpture and repurposing it is something that seems beyond artistic morality - taking someones hard work and repurposing it as your own seems like it shouldn't be allowed but the article continues on to explain Green's interpretation of the piece.Taking something, regardless of what it is, and deriving a unique perspective or take on it completely revolutionizes the piece; in Green's case, taking the success of the Balloon Dog sculpture and digitizing it to show the "life and death" of the piece is extremely evocative, telling a story while communicating the true nature of the piece through a digital medium. Making money from art is something that from a young age grabbed my attention - i could do something i love while making money (the dream). Looking into how artists make their living is something I must do more research on but now more than ever, digital art has broken through to the mainstream, some artists particularly making their names known in the world of cryptocurrency (NFTs) - the name that comes to ming instantly is the name beeple, a digital artist who recently sold on of their works for $70mill. Although it seems like an unattainable goal, it is possible to push media through to a fiscal side, profiting both financially and societally is becoming more and more achievable as society and technology advances.
